I listened toSteve's shows about VPN's a few weeks and got all excited about thetechnology. I wanted to learn about VPN's just because I could.
For themoment, all I want to do is VPN into my network and browse back out on tothe internet through my cable modem. I've been posting messages here andreading dozens, if not hundreds over on dslreports.com. I still have manyquestions. Sorry this is long, please bear with me. I went and got aLinksys BEFSX41 and upgraded the firmware to 1.50.18. I tried to follow theprocedure in the Linksys manual to set up a Win XP IPSec security policy.After half an hour of clicking and typing, Windows wouldn't assign thepolicy properly because IPSec Services isn't running and won't start.
Igave up on that. After many late night hours of reading, I've concludedthat I need to get a VPN client like Greenbow or Saferemote, etc. I startedtrying to configure the VPN settings in the router using some parameters Iread about over on the dslreports site.

B) Or, do they just have tomatch the other end of the tunnel?QUESTION 4: What's the best reasonably priced VPN client that is versatileand reliable?
Greenbow and Saferemote Lite seem to be well favored. I'vealso heard SSH Sentinel mentioned but somebody said it cannot processnetbios.Well, I tried to enter the above parameters in the BEFSX41 v2. Then, Ifound a BUG. The advanced screen Proposal 1 encryption setting does notsave properly. It says it's saved, but it doesn't. It reverts back to DES.I read somewhere else about someone mentioning this problem.
Upon, furtherreading, I found that several people think this firmware version 1.50.18 isunstable, and to paraphrase them, is garbage. There is a newer version,1.51.00, which is not on the Linksys website. I downloaded and installedthat from a link on the dslreports forum.
The BUG is still there.I found another BUG in this router. The DYNDNS update system is busted.Even after properly entering the account data, it always says the server isclosed.
This occurs in the 1.51.00 firmware also. I read a note on thedyndns.org website that says this is a Linksys problem and that they didn'tfollow the spec properly when writing the client.These two BUGS as well as the fact that the SX will only handle 2 tunnelsprompted me to return the router and search for another. Long ago, Ideveloped a personal rule never to buy the cheapest of anything.
They justseem to cut too many corners. It's always hard to pony up more money formore advanced equipment, but I always seem to be disappointed when I breakmy rule. I looked at the Netgear FVS114, the Zywall 5, and the LinksysBEFVP41.
I finally settled on the BEFVP41.So, back to the store. I was immediately impressed with the fact that theBEFVP41 had a PAPER manual, very detailed, of over 100 pages. Even thequick install guide was more thorough. It also has more LEDs. It does nothave auto crossover ports but does have one port with a manual crossoverswitch. I knew it was an older unit. But, it appears to be better.
Thisone supports 70 tunnels instead of 2. And, it has a hardware co-processor,so it should be faster. The VP is also IPSec certified by icsalabs.comwhereas the SX is not. The only features of the SX that the VP is missing,to my knowledge, are: SPI Firewall, URL Filtering (parental control),Ability to block Java, Active X, and Cookies. The only thing that concernsme somewhat is the lack of an SPI Firewall. The other things I can handlein software.QUESTION 5: A) Has anyone had experience with either or both of these units?B) would you agree that the VP is better?
C) I'm running a BEFVP41 version1. What's the difference between that and version 2? D) Should I returnthis and get a version 2? E) The firmware is at 1.41.1 dated Sept.

H) Is the lack of an SPI firewall a problem?I have not had a chance to test the VPN setup yet. However, I did test theDYNDNS settings and they appear to work, unlike the SX. Speaking of DYNDNS:QUESTION 6: A) Will the router update DYNDNS automatically whenever the IPchanges or do I have to press the APPLY button when there is a change?
B)Will the router update it every 28 days or so even without a change to keepthe DNS entry from being deleted? C) Will the router update the DNS entrymore often than every 28 days, even without a change, and thus get me barredfrom their system? D) If I'm using a PC software DYNDNS updater, how can Isupport both the lan and a phone connection?

When I'm on my lan, I want itto keep the DYNDNS host name for the router up to date. When I dial in on aphone line, I want it to update a DIFFERENT hostname for the modemconnection. The two must not conflict.Finally, assuming I can get the VPN tunnel working, I want to browse backout on the net. Assume the following two scenarios. At the moment, I'm nottrying to determine what to enter in the tunnel setup. I have a BEFSR41 v1 I've used for about 3 years.

The currently installed firmware is 1.02.00, Feb 11 2006. The reason I am am requesting the firmware is for preventive measures, in case I must re-flash the device. I live in a high lightning strike area, in the past I have had to re-flash other Linksys devices to bring them back from the grave.
Some have fried a port or two, but the re-flash has always allowed me to get back on-line quickly, then purchase another device. We have 2 BEFVP41 v2 routers set up at two locations (both latest code). These two routers are connected over a wireless network with less than 3% packet loss.The routers are set up with a VPN tunnel that works very well when connected. The problem occurs when the VPN tunnel is interrupted for any number of reasons including a power cycle. The routers will send thousands of ESP packets with a time to live of 1. This floods the wireless conneciton that is only designed to handle 550 packets per second (the flood is way greater than this), and knocks down the connection.What is the cause of this?
How can I resolve this? I have sent several e-mails to Tech Support without a reply over the last two weeks even thought I get an e-mail stating that someone will contact me within 24 hours, no one has.I think since Cisco took over, Linksys has taken a nose dive in the quality of customer service, and firmware stability. I have 2 computers connected to a router(Linksys BEFSR41 ver2) and cable modem(Motorola Surfboard SB 5100). One computer is running XP the other Vista.The problem is usually the Vista computer cannot connect to the internet unless the router is unplugged.Now, even unplugging doesn't help. I bypassed the router and plugged the Vista computer directly into the modem and was able to connect to the Internet.What,if anything can I do to still go through the router with both computers?
Does the router maybe need firmware or some update to go back to connecting both computers to the Internet without unplugging devices?I am a novice(as you can tell). When I disable router firewall all working fine but when firewall is enabled I receive error 619 on client machine.In router configuration I do the following: Security/Firewall - Firewall Enable (all other checkbox are unchecked) Security/VPN - VPN Passtrough PPTP enable AplicationGaming/Port Range Forwarding - I enable forward port 1723 (Both, TCP UDP) to my PPTP server IP What else I need to change in router configuration to make it working? Usually after the upgrade, you need to reset the router. In this way you’ll know if the firmware is really loaded successfully. If after the reset and you still have garbled in the list of VPN tunnel, I suggest contacting Cisco Tech support to further look into your concern. I believe this unit belongs to the business series devices that Cisco is now supporting. Try to go to this link for the other business series devices and the site where you can get hold of Cisco for support: ml. I just replaced a BEFVP41 with a new RVS4000.Previously I'd had DynDNS service set up, and had no problem getting it to work.
I've tried two sets of settings: the same way I'd set up my BEFVP41, and just like the BEFVP41 but without 'system=custom' after my host name (as had been recommended to me for the BEFVP41).Neither works. All I ever see is 'Status: Please wait.' When I try to connect. When I log into my account at DynDNS.org, the last update time I see corresponds to about 10 minutes before I'd disconnected my old BEFVP41 - there's no sign the RVS4000 has ever managed to reach DynDNS.org.
Another problem I'm having (and I'm wondering if somehow these problems are related) is that I can't get remote management (via HTTP over port 8080) of my RVS4000 to work either. All other router functionality that I've tried so far seems to be working, including port forwarding through my router to a web server on one of my computers. Has anyone else seen these problems with an RVS4000?Both problems together? Could they be related?Should I use 'mydomain.comsystem=custom' for the host name, like I had done with the BEFVP41, or should I enter nothing but 'mydomain.com' for the host name?
Hi,my network requiresa gateway which manages a modem to internet.Due to failsafe-requirements all PC use static IP.Therefore the gateway must be the DNS for my private network.I tried the BEFVP41 V1 (latest firmware) which works well, but after reconnecting to internet, the DNS-function is gone for about 30minutes.DNS request are not answered, but internet-DNS would work.Using a WRT54gl with tomatoe works perfectly, but I need a few VPN-tunnels.Is the firmware really that buggy?Is there any chance to get this fixed?( I must admit, that I'm somewhat dissappointed from linksys BEFVP41.)bye. Everything works fine. For tests I ping some site on internet andI watch the networktraffic with wireshark. ( Just to learn the 'good case'.)2) Go to the status menu and say disconnect and than connect again. Now the ping fails.( You could ping the IP of the target.) Wireshark now reveals, that the router doesn't reply to DNS-requests any more.
For more than 30minutes!I also own 2.WRT54GL with different linux-firmwares, all work as expected. Also a Zyxel 660HW and even a netgear router works fine.I bought the linksys because of the VPN-function, but I didn't expect that the basic function is not working flawless.Unfortunately there's no linux firmware for the BEFVP41, that's the reason why I'm caring about linksys firmware now;-). I am new to the boards, basically because I just bought a ver2 E280, and am havingproblems right from the gate. My computer at work recognizes the player as a mass storage drive, but not recognized by either of my home computers. I also do not have USB mode under the settings menu.I am also having the problem like someone else, that some of my ripped songs play very slow.Its weird because I ripped multiple songs from a CD, all at the same time with the same software, and some of those songs play fine and others don't. The songs all played fine on my other mp3 player, as well as the computer. I am reading great help and at least see others that have been dealing with the same problems.
I am updating my firmware as I type, as this seems to be the fix for some people.I had a cheap Siren mp3 player before this, and has worked great for 3 years. All songs played fine, always recognized by the computer, and never had to update firmware. I admit I am a little discouraged after buying this player brand new, and it doesn't work right.I have to download this 16M file on dial up and hope it fixes the problems. I have recently had the time of my life (not in a good way) installing my PLK200 into my hub, but I am still getting terrible network speeds to my media streamer (EVA8000) I therefore decided to upgrade the firmware to Ver 3.3 and followed the link from the PLE200 support page. The file downloaded was named 'Release 4' but the actual version of the config utility is Version 2 (!) Confusing to say the least. As the new firmware requires Utility Ver3.3 to get the devices upgraded (Ver 1 doesn't like the format of the new firmware file and Ver2 doesn't 'see' my devices), it looks like I'm snookered and stuck on the old, original firmware.Had anyone got any ides?

Firmware 3.3 Config Util Ver 2.As I mentioned in my first post I have a PLK200 (ie 2 x PLE200 ) I cannot upgrade the firmware using the original Config Util on the suppled CD - I just get an error message saying that it is incompatable with the present 'device manager' (I assume they mean config util) If I load up the Config Util Ver 2 (definitely not 3.3) it does not 'see' my devices. Stalemate And to cap it all today my devices are not talking to each other after working fine (but very slow) for most of yesterday evening. Hi, I have no been on hunt for a working WIFI adapter for the WDTV Live for a while and many stores do not let one test the adapter so I have so far bought two WIFI adapters (D-Link DWA-140 ver2 andBelkin F5D8053ed ver Ver.6001ED) but none of them are working on the latest WDTV Live firmware!? And its not possible to downgrade the adapters or get older version (all are sold out long ago). So really, make a update for the most common WIFI adapters pleas and maby we will continue to buy your mediacenter units.

Is it worth-while to flash upgrade from Rev 2.0 to Rev 2.1??Question (3):-Since flashing my BEFVP41 Router's Flash-ROM will involve some risk.If I fail in such a flashing operation, is it still covered by Linksys's original factory warrantly???? I've tried 2 methods to upgrade the firmware on this EtherFast Cable/DSL VPN Router with 4-Port 10/100 Switch 1) The router admin page has a 'Upgrade Firmware' URL BUT the does not display in IE8! The shows as a broken graphic in the web page when I guess it should show some kind of browse button. 2) I downloaded 'Firmware Ver.1.41.1' from the cisco website I followed the Upgrade.pdf instructions, and the 'Upgrade firmware' progress dialog showed some progress but then an Error dialog popped up - 'Unable to get responses from the server.'
Apart from being unable to upgrade the firmware, the BEFVP41 seems to work just fine.Need some assistance here please. I have 2 of the WRT54GX ver2 wireless routers.
One is at the front of the house where the DSL connection is and i have a Cat5e cable running to the back of the house and one floor up (about 30metres) I would like to plug a patch lead from the wall point to a LAN port on router2 at the back of the house and use this as a second access point.Reason is router 1 at the front works fine with Wireless but computers at the very back of the house get very weak signal and it is not reliable. Can the router 2 be set as an access point only as i did not see this option on the configuration page.I would like both routers doing wireless.Thanks in advance.Yes, you can definitely use the second router as an access point. As the second router is connected to the first router using an Ethernet cable, you need to change some setting on the second router.Connect a computer to the LAN port of the second router. Do not connect any thing else now. Reset the router for 30 seconds. On the computer connected to the second router, open Internet explorer and in the address bar type Type “admin” in both username and password.Make all the wireless setting of the router. Click on the tab that says Setup.
Change the router IP address to 192.168.1.2.ASSUMING THE IP ADDRESS OF FIRST ROUTER TO BE 192.168.1.1. Also disable the DHCP server on the router. Save settings.Unplug the power to the second router. Hello everyone, Just wanted to ask if anyone experienced or is experiencing the same issues I am seeing with a BEFVP41 V2 router with latest firmware Ver.1.02.06.3. Previously, the same router was on Ver.1.01.04, but my client went ahead and updated to the latest.
Now, the router exhibits the following issues: 1) DNS service on the router no longer works. I mean, a connected PC can no longer use/query the router LAN IP (e.g. 192.168.1.1) as a DNS server. This was working 100% on the previous firmware Ver.1.01.04.2) Updating DynDNS from the router almost always results in 'An unexpected server error.'
Or similar message indicated at the status portion of the DDNS page. 3) Selectively unblocking 'Anonymous WAN requests' via tick box is not working. Pings to the WAN IP are still blocked, unless I disable the SPI firewall completely.
Also, this was not a problem with the previous firmware Ver.1.01.04. I mean, I can still enable pinging the router WAN IP from the outside even while SPI is turned ON.With the latest firmware, if SPI is turned ON, you will not be able to ping the router WAN IP from the outside (i.e. From the Internet) even if you disable the 'Filter Anonymous WAN requests' option on the firewall/security page. On the flipside, the positive changes I've observed are: 1) Router is more stable now with the new firmware. Previous firmwareVer.1.01.04 usually required to be rebooted every other day or so because it sometimes goes into an infinite loop. 2) On the latest firmware, PPPoE redial is also better, I think, compared toVer.1.01.04 where sometimes the dialer just gives up after some time trying (requiring a router reboot afterwards).
Anybody got a better firmware version for this model? Hello Scrooge, Thanks for the reply.To answer your question, here is the procedure I followed in re-loading the latest firmware: 1) Reset the router to defaults via hardware button 2) Re-load the latest firmware (Ver.1.02.06.3) 3) Reset the router to defaults via hardware button 4) Re-configure the settings by hand Still the same problems as in my original post.
After much time spent in observing and troubleshooting it, I finally found a binary of the previous firmware version: Ver.1.01.04. Re-flashed the BEFVP41 V2 with the same and now it is back in business. Now that I think about it, I remember posting here a similar experience before with the same firmware version but different physical hardware. Completely forgot about it, I guess. Anyway, I consider my case solved now. Like many others in the forum, I am experiencing compatibility isue with the VSS ver2 and my ASUS DSL-N55U router.The power light stays solid but no other lights. After exhaustive exchanges back and forth with Vodafone technical and BT technical and after implementing all the required changes, port forwarding etc etc it still does not work.
It is fine with the BT Business Hub 3 which shows that the broadband line from bt is not at fault.As there are so many posts on this subject can VSS tech team advise if they know what the problem is and whether a solution has been found (i.e firmware update)? I am trying to update the firmware on my befvp41 v2 and can't seem to get it to flash. I think the file that I have downloaded is for the wrong version of the router but I can't find the right one.
The download page for the router: lets me choose which version I have. For v2.1 the file is: for v2.0 the file is: The two names are identical and both have v2.1 in the filename so they appear to be the same. Linksys Befvp41Can you point me to the correct v2.0 firmware file.
I have two used Linksys PAP Ver2 boxes, both show a slow 3 blink power LED with a short delay. Serial numbers are CH911FA06661 and CH911G300823.One has Version 1.00.13 firmware and the other Version 1.00.22. I have tried hardware button resets with no effect.There is no interactive voice response, just a message indicating the port is not working. No dial tone, no busy signal. The web connection is active but I can only log into the admin / admin since that is all I know the password for.With a packet sniffer I don't see either go for provisioning information. Is there a way to get these working again or are they bad?
Is there are reset tool or upgrade tool I can use? I work for a company that has 4 offices. 2 of the offices have the RV042 (my office being one of them) and the other 2 have the BEFVP41. All offices have different LAN IP addresses. The other office that has the RV042 uses the same Gateway settings that I have but he can see all offices and I can only see him. Hi,the fact that u are able to see the other RV042 says that your tunnel between both the RV042's is established.The fact that the other RV is able to see the other offices say that proper tunnels are setup between the RV and the 2 befvp's.the question remains though.have u created seperate tunnels between your RV and the 3 other routers???In order to see every office, u will have to create seperate tunnels between each site.let me know if u have done so.if yes, give me some specifics or errors that u get if any. I ignored it.Then I browsed to Lenovo home page(see below link) and downloaded one SHAREit application.Installed it and found the version ID '1.0.38.379'.a bit confused and surprised. Go to Solution. I have a client whose BEFVP41 V2 keeps on losing its DHCP table. The result is that the second PC in gets a duplicate IP to the first PC in (NO, they are not running fixed IPs, and NO, there is no other DHCP server on the network). I have set the DHCP lifetime to 10080 minutes = 1 week. In getting here, I inadvertently found out that setting the lifetime to 32767 minutes automagically wipes out the DHCP client table, but this is different.The table.is. There, then for some reason it disappears some time later (possible reset) - and a duplicate IP address is assigned. PLEASE tell me that the DHCP table is stored in nonvolatile RAM, and therefore should survive a power cycle / reboot.I just got a BEFVP41, labeled as version 2.1 on the bottom label.
What is the correct, latest firmware and where do I get it? In particular: 1. The Linksys download site only lists versions 1.0 and 2.0 for this router. The firmware version for 2.0 is 1.0.1, while the router I bought is running 1.0.2 (which I assume is later).The user manual shows the typical DDNS configuration page (like for WRT54G), but the actual router only shows a drop down menu. When I try to select DynDNS.org, the router resets the value back to Disable. How do I use DDNS on a BEFVP41? The user manual references an Appendix F which shows how to configure a tunnel from an IPSec client to the router.The actual user manual's App.

The latest firmware shown for a 'version 2.0' router is 1.0.1, while the router I have comes with 1.0.2 (which is presumably later and/or different). I had a wireless router behind it (WRT54G with DD-WRT). I have moved to a new town and switched to ATT/SBC DSL, the BEFVP41 cannot log into the PPPoE account, but wireless router does just fine. Q1 Are there any known issues with ATT PPPoE?The latest firmware for V1 is Ver.1.41.1.
I tried re-loading it and loading the system defaults. I turned on the advanced logging but haven't set up a wired machine to trap the SNMP messages yet. I doubt that the MAC address is the issue as I have bounced the DSL router/modem between attempts, but it is possible. I popped the wireless router back into place to post this message, it fired right up. When the BEFVP41 tries to connect, it gets the following in a popup: 'cannot connect to pppoe server' Q2 which is probably a stupid idea, are the v2 and v2.1 firmwares at all compatible with the v1 router? You mentioned that after the firmware upgrade, 'The configuration was not lost after loading the firmware, so I used the load default settings.' After a firmware upgrade, you must reset the router to factory defaults, then setup the router again from scratch.
If you saved a router configuration file, DO NOT use it. Please do this reset,and see if it corrects your problems. You need to do this reset, even though the routerappears to have retained all of its settings. In answer to your original question, I have never seen a problem with ATT PPPoE, however, users normally allow their ATT modem to do their PPPoE login, so your attempt to have a Linksys router directly do an ATT PPPoE login,is rare.Message Edited by toomanydonuts on 12:23 AM. Both of them do not work with Windows Vista RC2 5600 and 5744.The problem is that websites do not load at all or load only partially.
The RV082 router log shows that traffic between the requested websites and the computer running Windows Vista is blocked by the RV082 firewall. If I disable all firewall functions on the RV082, Vista can access all websiteswithout problem.I have several machines running behind the RV082 with various OS's like Windows XP, Windows 2003 Server R2, Max OS X, and none of them has these problems.Other Linksys routers like the BEFSR41, BEFSX41, BEFVP41 have no problem with Windows Vista improved IP stack either. I have a BEFVP41 that's a couple of years old and that I haven't used for a while. Now I'm trying to use it again as my main router as part of expanding my network. Ihookeddup three PCs to it.It assigns 192.168.1.100 to one and some other number generally between 101 and 105 to the others. All the PCs can ping the 100 computer, but nonecan ping any of the others. Sometimes the others can't even ping themselves.All the PCs can connect to the Internet through the router, butabout 25% of the time I get a standard browsererror messge when I try to access the router's firmware page. Usually refreshing the page clears the error. The DHCP table generally sees all PCs, though not all the time.I downloaded the Sept 03 firmware before starting all this, but I'm wondering if there's a compatibility problem.
The router worked fine a couple of years ago with whatever firmware it had in it.I didn't try this before downloading the new firmware. The router itself doesn't have any version number, so I'm guessing it's hardware version one.Any ideas? I recently changed ISP's and upgraded my firmware from version 1.01 to 1.02.
I noticed in the release notes for 1.01 that there were some issues with traceroute that was fixed in 1.02. Since I'm a network professional and occasionally have to troubleshoot network connectivity, I thought that fixing tracroute made the upgrade worth it. Now, however, the DHCP server provided by the router keeps cutting out about once per day. If I reboot the router, I can restore DHCP server functionality.When I did a packet capture it looks like the router is responding with NAK messages when clients try to use the DHCP address that the router itself provides. Is there a different firmware that I can use (e.g., rolling back to 1.01) or should I just go buy a new router? BEFVP41 with 1.02.06, build 003 Oct 24 2008 firmware: 1.Two of these routers setup as VPN.
2.One router is setup with Remote Secure Group and Remote Security Gateway as ANY (static IP), the other has the IP of the first router (dynamic IP). The router with the Static IP loses the VPN connection every few days, shows status DISCONNECTED in the VPN menu.If I just do a 'Save Settings' in the VPN menu it re-connects the VPN tunnel. (I do not change any settings before I click 'Save Settings', or I can just change one character in the Pre-shared Key and save and then change back and re-save).
The VPN connection is established even though as described in #4 below the dynamic IP router menu can NOT be accessed and itsdynamic IP has NOT changed throughout this behavior. The menu of the router with the dynamic IP can not be accessed thru its IP addess, XX.XXX.XX.XXX:8080, BUT an internet camera set-up as DMZ can be accessed thru the same IP address XX.XXX.XX.XXX:80.The dynamic IP does NOT change thruout this behavior. If the router is re-set by unplugging/plugging then the menu (and the camera)can be accessed and, of course, the Dynamic IP will change.Both routers have been flashed AND re-flashed with the latest FW. This is FLAKY behavior, to put it mildly. These routers DO NOT operate in a STABLE and PROPER manner. A stable VPN tunnel is NOT maintained, and the router is inaccessible. This does not seem to be a router problem as replacing these two routers with two others does not resolve the problems.It certainly appears to be a LINKSYS FIRMWARE problem.
Can CISCO/LINKSYS update the Firmware to provide a stable and proper operation of this product???I went one step further and replaced both routers with new (v. 2) ones that had older FW and followed your procedure. Everything from scratch! I'll give'em a couple of weeks or so and see how it goes with maintaining a stable VPN tunnel.I've been using these routers for several years now and I've found that they require constant attention/maintainance about a couple of times/week to reconnect the tunnel. This is the 3rd pair. The first pair was v. 1.0 My hunch is that something degrades inside these units with time.
It may be the memory gradually becomes defective and the settings can not be kept and/or the other electronics become defective. The FW may have something to do with it as it does not seem to have the ability to properly refresh/reload the user settings after a warm start.I've also found out that these warm starts/resets occur by themselves without any action from me. Perhars Linksys can address these issues with a new FW. After all the most recent FW is a couple of years old. I cannot give fixed IPs to the two laptops connected to the network - they move to other locations, therefore must stay DHCP.2. No-one is resetting the router - it seems to reset itself. This is not the first BEFVP41 I have encountered with this problem.One of my other clients gets P'd off because the router resets itself 3-4 times per day - interrupting his FM-over-the-internet.
UPS does not solve the problem (here or at the other client). Could this be aflaky power supply, or???3.No software firewalls in sight. I am supporting a number of BEFVP41 routers - Version 1, 2 and 2.1. They ALL seem to have an annoying habit: after being on for some time (minutes, hours or days), if you try to login to the router, they don`t respond after the correct password has been entered - and you get redirected to a Google search for the URL you entered. The only way around this is to reset the router (power off / power on). Then the routers behave properly - for a time.Resetting the router is difficult to do if the router is remote - and unattended.All routers are at the latest firmware level (1.41.1, 1.01.04, 1.02.00).
It makes no difference what OS is`'talking' to the router: 2000, XP, 2003. All have the same issue.My clients think I'm nuts to be staying loyal to Linksys; they want to throw them out because they've been so unreliable.I'm starting to think they're right. We are facing a strange problem with some BEFVP41 (ver2.1, with firmware 1.02.00). We have several of these routers installed and starting from some days it seems that a lot of them started failing: it looks like they keep restarting every few seconds, the PC connected to the are continuosly saying 'ethernet cable disconnected'.The strange thing is that this is happening in a time frame of few days. Nothing is logged in the system log.

I have two retail stores being hooked up via two router/firewalls: One of my locations is using a Sonicwall Pro 230 and the other is the Linksys BEFVP41. I have successfully set up a VPN connection and everything is working fine as far as IP addresses are concerned, meaning, I can access each others machines using IP addresses. I have enabled NetBIOS broadcasts on both my Sonicwall and the BEFVP41, the machines behind the Sonicwall can PING the machines behind the BEFVP41 using the 'machinename' (in addition to the IP address), however, the machines behind the BEFVP41 cannot ping the machines behind the Sonicwall using the 'machinename' (it only works using IP addresses). Again, I have enabled NetBIOS broadcasts on both devices.

But suddenly it's no longer possible to connect to the exchange server. Not even by using webmail in Internet Explorer. When I disconnect the vpn connection the problem is gone and I can connect by webmail without any problems.Users outside the office network (and also outside the vpn) never have any problems.
All other protocols seem to work fine. Also normal internal websites work without any problems. FTP, VNC, RDP also work fine. I was looking for a firmware update, but the most recent firmware for the BEFVP41 was even older than the one I have. How is that possible???Any ideas?Thanks.RikPS: Actually it's possible to use webmail, but it's very slow! It takes the client about 10 minutes to logon!

We have a ipsec tunnel set up between 2 befvp41 v2 routers running 1.01.04 firmware.I have the local and remote groups set to subnet and using the proper subnets in each. Router a is 192.168.1.5 and router b is 192.168.2.1 DHCP is enabled on both. IPSEC passthru is unchecked. Both routers are assigned a dsl static ip address The tunnel connects and I can ping the static gateway ip's from each router but no traffic will pass thru the tunnel. Do I need to set some static routing for the traffic to pass thru the tunnel?I have tried everything I can find but no traffic passes. Thank You Kenny.
I am trying to get a BEFVP41 router to work with my modem. I have connected the modem's network cable into the WAN port on the router, but none of thelights on the WAN port turn on (Link, Act, Diag).My first guess was that the routerwas broken, butthe power is on (light is green), and when I connect the router to the computer via network cable, the lights in the port (Port 1 in my case) light up the way they should (according to the manual). I don't understand why my router isn't recognizing the modem.I tried resetting both, I disconnected all cables and plugged them back in, but to no avail. I don't understand this.

Both routers have the latest firmware updates from the Linksys website. I can get the tunnel to initiate but it drops and won't reconnect at the 'Key Lifetime' (I think).If I reboot both routers they re-connect until the KeyLifetime again. Tried everything but currently using 3DES, MD5, Auto IKE, PFS, Agressive Mode = Yes. After the upgraded I noticed the BEFVP41required a 24 Character password for DES that i think is a firmware glitch.All the Key Lifetimes are set to 300 for testing purposes now. MTU is at the default Keep alive and Net Bios checked. I have 20 BEFVP41 routers in a meshed VPN configuration for a small company: I am a software engineer who runs the entire Network and System infrastructure for about 100 employees.
The older models that I had purchased three+ years ago are working fine, and I do not have ANY issues with them at all.Recently I had to add and replace a few failing sites with the BEFVP41 v2: Now, I am seeing the router reboot / reboot+hang whenever it wants. I have tried: Reinstalling the firmwareReplacing the routerChanging configurations for the VPN tunnels Some routers are using DHCP, PPPoE, and Static IP addresses. The only possibility is that there is a tunnel configuration that this system does not like. Point blank: There are MANY people on the web that are trashing this model and there have been no firmware updates in years. Thus, where I have older sub-version routers still in the company and working FINE with the latest firmware available for their version.Unfortunately, I hope this is not the case, but I am concerned that the latest versions available to purchase are using substandard components, if truly there is no firmware that Linksys can create to either diagnose this problem (verbose firmware to log messages) or correct the situation.

I've been trying to get the Windows Small Business Server 2003 R2 VPN client to connect to our SBS 2003 R2 server through the BEFVP41.
It doesn't work and gives the following error in the logs.21 On-Error Event ErrorCode = 806 ErrorSource = RAS Following this up indicates that the BEFVP41 is not handling the GRE 47 protocol correctly. Now I've seen a blog entry that indicates that the BEFVP41 v2 firmware 1.01.04 from 2005 doesn't handle this type of VPN pass through. Now this isn't the same as opening up ports (which I can do) but is related to some sort of pass through for VPN. Does anyone know if this is correct? Previously, the same router was on Ver.1.01.04, but my client went ahead and updated to the latest.Now, the router exhibits the following issues: 1) DNS service on the router no longer works.
I mean, a connected PC can no longer use/query the router LAN IP (e.g. 192.168.1.1) as a DNS server. This was working 100% on the previous firmware Ver.1.01.04. 2) Updating DynDNS from the router almost always results in 'An unexpected server error.' Or similar message indicated at the status portion of the DDNS page.
3) Selectively unblocking 'Anonymous WAN requests' via tick box is not working.Pings to the WAN IP are still blocked, unless I disable the SPI firewall completely. Also, this was not a problem with the previous firmware Ver.1.01.04. I mean, I can still enable pinging the router WAN IP from the outside even while SPI is turned ON. With the latest firmware, if SPI is turned ON, you will not be able to ping the router WAN IP from the outside (i.e.From the Internet) even if you disable the 'Filter Anonymous WAN requests' option on the firewall/security page. On the flipside, the positive changes I've observed are: 1) Router is more stable now with the new firmware.Previous firmware Ver.1.01.04 usually required to be rebooted every other day or so because it sometimes goes into an infinite loop.
2) On the latest firmware, PPPoE redial is also better, I think, compared to Ver.1.01.04 where sometimes the dialer just gives up after some time trying (requiring a router reboot afterwards). Re-flashed the BEFVP41 V2 with the same and now it is back in business.Now that I think about it, I remember posting here a similar experience before with the same firmware version but different physical hardware. Completely forgot about it, I guess.Anyway, I consider my case solved now.goodtextog.
