In his speech in the exhibition Chief Nanga does not agree withJalio’s wearing style and tells him not to wear it the other day what ChiefNanga needs is just to see him appearing in suit or national costume.
Also ChiefNanga fails even knowing the names of news paper writers and he is the ministerof culture. Then we come across the flashback aboutthe visit of the editor to Chief Nanga’s home that was paid few days before theexhibition day. Here we are told that the minister is not interested to see theeditor. Chief Nanga gives the editor two bottles of beer, enough pieces ofcigarettes and a dash of five pounds after an account of his trouble with hislandlord over an area of rent, it was not a straightforward case but becausethe landlord and the editor came from different tribes, the elements oftribalism could not be ruled out. Still in the room the discussion isabout the name of the party and others do propose that the party should be madeof only professional men and therefore do not agree the party to be called asCommon People’s Convention and refer back to the history of Carl Max and thegreatest revolution was not launched by common people but intellectuals. Alsothey do not agree the party to be understood as communist, as they will say“Look at those crazy people who want to have everything in common includingtheir wives”.
Also, the other day Odili visits Mrs.Nanga in the village and reaches her with her children and Odili tries to tellMrs. Nanga that the house is very cool at Bori when it is out of her andchildren then Mrs. Nanga says that she will go back after the month when ChiefNanga will be on the way to America and Odili asks Mrs. Nanga if they would gotogether with Chief Nanga and Mrs. Nanga says “when Edna comes she will go tothose places”.
This leads Odili to get to know about the woman called Edna. Nanga says Edna is their new wife. Two hours after Odili has reached thencomes Edna with a car that was sent to bring her.
After the drunken visitor hasgone Mrs. Nanga takes Odili to V.I.P room and sends Edna to Odili with bottleof beer and a glass on a tray. Edna serves Odili silently and goes to lean withher elbows looking outside. And later Edna sits down and Odili starts giving advice Edna about not toagree about marriage and Edna guess that Odili was told by Mrs.
Nanga andbecomes sad about it and then things are settled. Then Odili visits again Mrs. Nanga’shome and when Mrs. Nanga sees Odili she becomes sad because Odili contests withChief Nanga.
After meeting Mrs. Nanga then Odili goes to the Anata MissionHospital to see Edna but the gate man refuses to get into the hospital with hiscar and the gate man shouts at Odili, but unfortunately Odili does not findEdna in the hospital then he decides to go to Edna’s home although Edna’sfather had told him earlier not to set foot over the area. Odili manages to seeEdna but Edna is scared of his father and tells Odili to go yet Odili refusesand Odo decides to call the people for Adili in order to threaten him Edna’sfather aims the matchet to Odili and ask him who does he want there and simplyAdili says “I came to persuade him and his family to cast their paper for me onvoting day” (pg.106).
In hospitalOdili was under arrest because he had a case of possessing dangerous weaponsfound in his car, where by the car was destroyed by the chief Nanga followers.Edna and Odilis father were very close to Odili in his existencein hospital.Odili receives different information such as the lost of the form to sign forelection and the death of max in Abaga, the last night, where by,max’sgirlfriend, Eunice had revenge to her boyfriend death by shooting ChiefKoko on his chest to death, then she was prisoned. In the novel, the authorportrayed Chief Nanga as an irresponsible leader as he fails even knowing namesof few writers in the country despite being a minister of culture, “Chief Nanga hadn’t even heard the man‘sname before ”. Also chief Nanga’s brother calling himself P.I.V a poorinnocent victim, portrayed as an irresponsible one because he complain on hisbrother chief Nanga who isV.I.P while he is drinking some beer without working, ( page 95 ). Also theauthor portrayed Chief Koko too as a corrupt leader who bribed Maxwell Kulamoto step down from election, “MaxwellKulamo has more sense than you. He has already taken his money and agreed tostep down for Chief Koko”(Page119). The book isvery relevant to our current societies, because all things which discussed within the book by the author are those found in our current societies especiallyin African countries. For example, the issue of corruption has been discussedby author by using Chief Nanga who tries to bribe Odili by giving him a certainamount of money but Odili rejected so even in our societies the issue of corruptionis the big problem because higher leaders tend to practice corruption. So, thisbook is very relevant to our societies. Spared is a thriller.
