AbstractThe author and contributors to this textbook have produced one of the best textbooks on otolaryngology available on the market today. The account is comprehensive and well illustrated. The textbook has excellent chapters on the anatomy and physiology of the ear, nose, sinuses, mouth, esophagus, mediastinum, head, and neck. Each chapter ends with a suggested reading list that is up to date and includes many of the classic articles on the subject under discussion. If there is a weakness in the book, it is the part dealing with radiology of the ear.
There is a lack of discussion and illustration of the routine mastoid x-ray films. The authors do illustrate more unusual radiographs, for example, retrograde jugular venograms. The format of each chapter begins with the specific common clinical disorder followed by key features, epidemiology, clinical presentation, evaluation, therapeutic options, and follow-up care.This contemporary text also describes the emergent diagnostic and treatment responses to common otolaryngologic disorders at one’s fingertips. This handbook was designed to be light and easy to carry in the clinic and on the wards.Overall, this book is of excellent quality, having 164 illustrations and very instructive tables. The content of each section is very concise without being overly verbose, covering key salient clinical points. For the nonotolaryngologist who may not be totally familiar with the disorder in question, it is a rapid searchable reference to give quick clinical answers.In summary, this clinical textbook is a very easy-to-read, contemporary, rapid reference describing current diagnoses and common treatments for common otolaryngologic disorders. It is a superb resource for medical students, residents, and fellows.
